In March 2020, a need assessment survey was conducted using Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) method with the help of Sevavardhini, Pune to identify the problems and opportunities of a geographical region covering 9 Grampanchayats and 20 hamlets. This village cluster possesses similar challenges such as water scarcity in summer, rain-fed farming, migration due to unemployment, lack of public healthcare & transportation facilities etc.

Based on the inputs from RRA, various Rural Development Projects were launched, such as –

1. Jaldoot & Water Resource Development

Based on the Need Assessment Survey using RRA method to assess the water scarcity situation, it was found that despite of good amount of rainfall, many villages faced water scarcity during summer.

To address this, BSM launched the “Jaldoot” initiative in Padali, aimed at providing safe and sufficient drinking water to the needy villages and hamlets.

Both the Jaldoot program and plantation efforts have become regular activities contributing to long-term water and environmental sustainability in the region.

2. Sacred Grove Conservation

BSM identified a sacred grove in Padsali Village for immediate conservation efforts due to its rich biodiversity and ecological significance.

The grove is home to many endemic plants, birds, insects, microorganisms, and the Maharashtra state animal, the Giant Squirrel.

The program also focused on the plantation of endemic plants to help control soil erosion and promote environmental sustainability.

BSM involved students from Shivaji University in the conservation activities and collaborated with the local Wildlife Division for expertise and support.

The aim is to ensure the preservation and sustainability of the sacred grove for future generations and maintain its critical role in the local ecosystem.

3. Gram Maitri & Skill Development Programs

BSM launched a Rural Development Project to improve the lives of villagers in remote areas, focusing on reducing hardships and raising their standard of living.

The ‘Gram Maitri’ program was introduced to encourage city residents to support local village products, providing a way for villagers to earn income.

BSM provided guidance in Farming, Organic Agriculture, and Rural Tourism, benefiting young entrepreneurs in these sectors.

The Janakalyan Samiti helped organize workshops on repairing household electrical appliances, promoting self-employment and skill development.

BSM conducts Vocational Training Workshops for women and youth, focusing on skills like Tailoring and Domestic Electrical Equipment Repairing to encourage self-sufficiency and economic independence.

Efforts are made to boost the confidence of local youth and women, empowering them to pursue livelihoods and contribute to community development.

4. Medical Camps

BSM recognized the severe lack of medical care and public transportation in the hilly regions and initiated Free Medical Camps to address these challenges.

Mobile doctors and nursing staff conducted Free Health Check-Ups, particularly targeting the elderly and needy members of the community.

The ‘Doctor Tumchya Gavi’ campaign reached 17 villages, providing over 2000 men and women with services like free Health Counseling and Eye Check-Ups.

Through this initiative, BSM has become a pillar of trust and support for rural communities, offering essential healthcare in the absence of local medical facilities

BSM is planning Larger-Scale Projects to expand its Medical Services and enhance Healthcare Access in more villages across the region.
