Kolhapur – 416211, Maharashtra
Kolhapur is a prosperous district. However, the villages on the plateau of seven hilly talukas in the Sahyadri ranges are far away from prosperity.
Most villages lack a reliable water source and depend on rain-fed crops like rice and millets, which bring little income, leading many to migrate for work, leaving behind women, children, and the elderly. Kasba Tarale and Durgmanwaad in Radhanagari face similar challenges. Predominantly in the agrarian belt of Kasaba Tarale, Education has been hindered due to poor roads, forcing students to travel 12-15 km daily. Water scarcity, especially after the monsoon has also been the matter of great concern.
During the Emergency, Shriram Thakur, Digambar Phadnis, Dattatray Potdar, Vitthal Patil, and Ramchandra Teli, all from Kolhapur and members of RSS, came together as prisoners at Yerwada Jail. In 1978, after their release, they founded Bhogavati Sanskrutik Mandal and started a hostel in Kasba Tarale, offering much-needed relief to students from remote hilly villages.
